Why stop using plastic bags?

Plastic bags are everywhere in our daily life. When we go shopping, we use plastic bags because they are convenient. Even in our lives, plastic bags have become a part of us. However, the convenience of these plastic bags comes at a high cost to the environment and has a negative impact on human health. Now, many cities in China have banned the use of plastic bags,Bangladesh and India have only banned the use and sale of polyethylene bags with a thickness of no more than 50 microns.

Furthermore, the use of plastic bags is considered to be one of the major issues facing contemporary human life.

Firstly, Plastic bags pollute not only water but also land. Plastic bags are usually very light, sso they can either float away with the wind or flow with the water. These plastic bags get trapped in trees, on fences and between trees floating in bodies of water, end up into the ocean.

Secondly, plastic bags are made from non-renewable resources , so the use of plastic bags will have a great impact on climate change . Most plastics are made from polypropylene, which is a material made from oil and natural gas. All of these materials are non-renewable fossil fuel-based materials, by extracting the raw materials used to make plastic bags, greenhouse gases are produced which further contribute to global climate change.

Third, plastic bags do not degrade. Petroleum-based plastic bags do not degrade; they can only be broken down into tiny pieces, which are then refined and end up in the ocean, where they are then consumed by wildlife. Currently, there are approximately 46,000-1,000,000 plastic fragments floating in every square mile of ocean worldwide.

Fourth, plastic bags are toxic. Plastic bags will produce toxic chemical gases when burned. For example, polystyrene in the burning will produce toluene. This substance once inhaled by the human body will cause vomiting symptoms. The burning of PVC will also produce the toxic gas hydrogen chloride. In addition to burning, the high temperature environment will also cause the plastic to decompose into toxic components such as benzene rings.

Fifth,Plastic bags are harmful to marine life. For example, turtles and fish often mistake plastic bags for food and eat them. Accidental ingestion of plastic bags will cause sea turtles and fish to suffocate their digestive systems and eventually die from suffocation.

Sixth, Plastic bags are harmful to human health. Certain chemicals in plastic bags can disrupt the normal functioning of hormones in the human body. Most plastic bags in the ocean contain pollutants that move through the food web when marine animals and fish are exposed to seawater, creating a source of pollution that can threaten human health.

The use of plastic bags not only endangers the natural ecology, but also has an impact on the safety of human life. Therefore, we should actively respond to environmental protection policies to stop using plastic bags and protect the safety of the environment, starting from you and me.
